It’s great to hear that Croydon’s festival season continues beyond August. Now we’re nearing the halfway mark of the school summer holidays, I’m scanning the September calendar for events to look forward to.
One such event is the new Purley Community Festival which takes place on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 September on Purley’s Rotary Field as part of the This Is Croydon programme. I’m very glad a festival is returning to this part of our borough, after enjoying several festivals on the Rotary Field in past years.
This Purley Community Festival is being delivered by Purley BID and Purley Panel who work hard for this area of Croydon. Being my nearest high street when I was a kid, I have quite often overlooked Purley, but it has a vast array of restaurants, great community events, a fair few famous alumni and even its own street art. Incidentally did you know that 80s sitcom Terry and June was set in this suburban part of the borough? So if you haven’t yet explored Purley, the second weekend in September is the perfect time to do so.
For the festival itself expect two days worth of live music from local bands, solo artists and tribute acts. Keep an eye on their website as they continue to announce artists in the coming weeks. There will also be food and drink, arts and crafts stalls from local designer-makers, circus acts, activities for the kids (including face painting, glitter art, a bouncy castle, and a special appearance by a snow princess) as well as a line-up of guest speakers who will inspire and entertain with their stories and experiences.
This free festival runs on Saturday 9 September from midday until 8pm; and on Sunday 10 September from 11am until 6pm on Purley’s Rotary Field – well worth hopping on one of the many buses that travel down the Brighton Road to pop by for a visit (the nearest bus stop is Montpelier Road).
